Microbial endocrinology

چکیده

There has been accelerating recognition that the field of microbial endocrinology provides a theoretical basis with which to propose and examine new biological mechanisms extending from susceptibility to infectious disease to food preferences. This is not surprising given the recognition that the microbiome plays a leading, if not central role, in the determination of health and pathogenesis of a number of disease states, many of which had not previously been thought to have a microbial component. As such, microbial endocrinology which represents the intersection of microbiology and endocrinology provides for a new theoretical framework which will interest scientists and clinicians across a wide spectrum.

Microbial endocrinology: how stress influences susceptibility to infection.

A holistic approach to understanding the mechanisms by which stress influences the pathogenesis of infectious disease has resulted in the development of the field of microbial endocrinology. This transdisciplinary field represents the intersection of microbiology with mammalian endocrinology and neurophysiology, and is based on the tenet that microorganisms have evolved systems for using neuroh...

Microbial endocrinology and the microbiota-gut-brain axis.

Microbial endocrinology is defined as the study of the ability of microorganisms to both produce and recognize neurochemicals that originate either within the microorganisms themselves or within the host they inhabit. As such, microbial endocrinology represents the intersection of the fields of microbiology and neurobiology. The acquisition of neurochemical-based cell-to-cell signaling mechanis...

Probiotics function mechanistically as delivery vehicles for neuroactive compounds: Microbial endocrinology in the design and use of probiotics.

I hypothesize here that the ability of probiotics to synthesize neuroactive compounds provides a unifying microbial endocrinology-based mechanism to explain the hitherto incompletely understood action of commensal microbiota that affect the host's gastrointestinal and psychological health. Once ingested, probiotics enter an interactive environment encompassing microbiological, immunological, an...

Beneficial Effects of Inactive and Non-Viable Probiotics on Health

According to the World Health Organization, viable probiotics could have health effects. However, in recent years, many benefits have been observed through application of inactive and non-viable cells of microbes or their metabolites. Therefore, probiotics could be defined as viable, inactive, or non-viable microbial cells or cell extracts that have beneficial health effects on the host. Based...

Exploring the Association between Alzheimer’s Disease, Oral Health, Microbial Endocrinology and Nutrition

Longitudinal monitoring of patients suggests a causal link between chronic periodontitis and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the explanation of how periodontitis can lead to dementia remains unclear. A working hypothesis links extrinsic inflammation as a secondary cause of AD. This hypothesis suggests a compromised oral hygiene leads to a dysbiotic oral microbiome whereby ...
